On a layover at PEK? If you are considering a Beijing PEK Airport to Great Wall of China stop, first read Can You Leave PEK During a Layover?.
Before you decide, consider the transport, the time you have, and your onward plans. If you are on a layover, first make sure you can leave the airport.
Can You Leave PEK During a Layover?
A layover does not automatically give you time outside the airport. Before you look at Badaling or Mutianyu, confirm that you can enter China and that your checked bag will not keep you at PEK. The route and the time decision come after these checks.
First, Check Whether You Qualify to Enter China
If you are relying on China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy (official conditions , latest eligibility update), check the current official list before you travel. You need to:
- be a citizen of an eligible country;
- hold an international travel document valid for at least three months;
- meet the entry requirements for the third country or region you are travelling to;
- hold a confirmed interline ticket, or other proof, for onward travel to that third country or region within 240 hours.
Once you reach immigration at PEK, you will need to apply for temporary entry and complete the Arrival Card for Temporary Entry Foreigners. The immigration officer makes the final decision on admission.
Then Confirm What Happens to Your Checked Bag
Ask your airline or transfer desk whether your checked bag is through-checked to your next flight. If you have luggage to carry yourself and it would make a Great Wall visit awkward, use PEK's 24-hour staffed luggage-storage service. The counters are beside Gate 7 in the T2 first-floor arrivals hall and on the west side of the public area in the T3-C second-floor arrivals hall.
Once you know you can leave the airport and what to do with your luggage, you can choose between Badaling and Mutianyu and plan the journey.
Choose Badaling or Mutianyu and Plan the Round Trip
When you plan a Beijing Capital International Airport to Great Wall of China trip, choose the attraction first and then check that the route works in both directions. How you get there and where you need to go afterwards may also affect which attraction fits your day.
Badaling or Mutianyu: Which Should You Choose?
We recommend spending 3 to 5 hours at either Badaling or Mutianyu. That gives you time to enter the site and walk a useful stretch of the wall without treating the visit as a quick photo stop.
For a first Great Wall visit, I would start with Badaling. Its well-restored walls give you the grand, classic Great Wall view that many first-time visitors have in mind. Choose Mutianyu instead if you prefer a greener mountain setting, with the wall winding over forested ridges and watchtowers placed closely along the route.
How to Get From PEK to Badaling and Back
| Option | Typical one-way time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PEK airport bus | 1-2h | 1. Service: PEK runs a direct airport bus to Badaling. This is outbound only, so arrange your own return. 2. Departures: Daily at 10:00 and 12:00. 3. Boarding: See Using the PEK Airport Shuttle Bus for terminal pickup points and how to take the bus. |
| Pre-booked private car | 1-2h | 1. Round trip: Book both journeys in advance and confirm your return pickup from Badaling. 2. Airport pickup: Your driver waits in your terminal's arrivals area with a name sign, so you can find them easily after you land. |
| Pre-booked Didi | 1-2h | 1. What it is: Didi is a widely used ride-hailing app in China. You can schedule both your outbound and return rides in advance. 2. Airport pickup: You need to find PEK's designated ride-hailing pickup zone yourself. See our Didi airport pickup guide for directions. |
| Official taxi | 1-2h | 1. Airport pickup: Take a taxi from PEK's official taxi rank. See Taking an Official Taxi from PEK for pickup locations. 2. Return: Finding a taxi at Badaling can be uncertain, so this option is not recommended if you need to return on a tight schedule. |
| Public transport | 2-3h | 1. Recommendation: This route requires several transfers and takes much longer, so we do not recommend it. 2. If you still choose it: Use our Route Planning guide to plan the connections. See Taking the PEK Airport Express for the first leg from your terminal. |
Of the options above, a pre-booked private car is the simplest way to arrange the full round trip. I recommend booking through Trip.com so you can arrange your airport pickup and return before you set out.
Row 8 in the schedule below shows the PEK airport bus departure times for the Badaling Great Wall Line:

How to Get From PEK to Mutianyu and Back
Private cars, Didi, and taxis work the same way as the Badaling options above. The journey is shorter, but PEK has no airport bus to Mutianyu. Public transport requires several transfers and is not recommended.

| Pre-booked Didi | 1-1.5h |
| Official taxi | 1-1.5h |

Can You Visit the Great Wall and Still Make Your Next Flight?
If you are visiting the Great Wall during a layover, use this sequence to test the route you chose above.
- Set your target airport arrival time. Confirm where your next flight departs and plan to reach that airport 2 to 3 hours before takeoff. This is a general planning range, not a fixed airline rule. Before leaving, ask the transfer desk or airport service desk how early they recommend arriving.
- Calculate the full outing. Add the estimated outbound and return travel times to the 3 to 5 hours you plan to spend at the Great Wall.
- Check that the visit fits the opening hours. Once you know when you would arrive at the Great Wall and when you need to leave, compare those times with the opening-hours table below. Make sure you have enough time for the visit before the attraction closes, then confirm the latest schedule on the booking page.
- Give yourself some breathing room for traffic, waiting, and small delays. If the timing already feels tight on paper, save the Great Wall for another trip rather than spending the visit watching the clock.
